NOW SERVING METRO DETROIT
Mohel in Detroit & Oakland County — A Bris at Home
Metro Detroit is home. Rabbi Fischer and his family live here — which makes this the one place we can usually say yes to a date at short notice.
For most of what this practice does, that is a convenience. For a bris it is the whole thing, because the eighth day is fixed by the calendar and cannot be moved to suit anyone's diary.
The community we come to
Jewish Detroit is concentrated in Oakland County, and most of the brisim we perform are a short drive from our own front door. Oak Park has more synagogues, Jewish schools and kosher businesses than any other suburb in the metro, and is home to a large share of the area's Orthodox families — many second- and third-generation residents. Southfield, Huntington Woods, West Bloomfield, Farmington Hills, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills make up most of the rest. We also come into Detroit proper and across the wider metro.
Rabbi Tzvi Fischer is a certified mohel, trained in New York, certified by the International Bris Milah Association, performing circumcisions since 2001 — the seventh generation of his family to do this work.
THE EIGHTH DAY
The things that are only easy when the mohel is local
Three situations come up constantly, and all three are workable here in a way they are not at the end of a two-hour drive:
The baby arrives early. The eighth day moves with the birth, not the due date. If he comes ten days ahead of schedule, the whole plan shifts — and locally that is a phone call rather than a problem.
The date only firms up two days out. Jaundice, feeding, a paediatric review. Being nearby means we can wait for the answer instead of needing certainty a week ahead.
It falls on a Shabbat or a festival. A bris is performed on the eighth day regardless, which is part of why mohelim exist as a role distinct from hospital staff. Minutes away, this is routine.
If your son is not well, the bris waits. Jewish law puts the baby's health first, explicitly. Jaundice, prematurity, low weight or illness all postpone it, and a postponed bris is correct practice, not a failure. We will say so plainly if we think waiting is right.
Travel for Oakland County is also at the low end of anything we quote.
Detroit bris questions
How quickly can you come for a bris in Oakland County?
Faster than anywhere else we serve, because we live here. Short-notice and specific-day requests are genuinely workable in Oak Park, Southfield, West Bloomfield and the surrounding communities. Tell us the birth date and we will give you a straight answer.
Our son came early — does the eighth day move?
Yes. It counts from the birth, not the due date. Call as soon as he arrives and we will work out the date with you; being local is exactly what makes a shifted date manageable.
Can the bris be at a synagogue hall or a relative's house?
Yes — anywhere in the metro you are gathering. We bring the setup to the address you give us.
It is a real circumcision, properly done
A local anesthetic, sterile professional-grade instruments, and screening beforehand — prematurity, feeding, weight, jaundice, bleeding history, vitamin K. There are findings, hypospadias among them, that mean we decline and tell you why. What the visit involves · the ceremony in full · mohel vs. doctor.
If you want no religious element at all, that is also the visit — families who are not Jewish choose a mohel for the specialism rather than the tradition.
What it costs
A $980 professional fee, plus travel expenses, quoted upfront. No separate ceremony charge. Oakland County travel is the lowest we quote anywhere.
