SERVING MICHIGAN

Mohel in Michigan — A Bris at Home

Michigan is where this practice is based. Rabbi Tzvi Fischer and his family live in metro Detroit, which makes Michigan the state where we have the most flexibility on dates — and for a bris, where the eighth day is fixed by the calendar, flexibility is the whole thing.

Where Michigan's Jewish families are

Roughly 72,000 Jewish residents statewide, and the great majority of them in Oakland County — Oak Park, Southfield, Huntington Woods, West Bloomfield, Farmington Hills, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. Oak Park has more synagogues, Jewish schools and kosher businesses than any other suburb in the state.

Mohel in Detroit & Oakland County → — the detail for most Michigan families, including why short-notice dates work here and almost nowhere else.

Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County are the other real concentration: around 10,000 Jewish residents, a large student and academic community around the University of Michigan, and a demographic that skews toward exactly the age where this question comes up. Ann Arbor is about half an hour from us, so it has nearly the same flexibility as Oakland County.

Beyond those two, Michigan's Jewish communities are small and scattered — Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, Kalamazoo, Traverse City. We travel to all of them. There is no minimum community size for a bris, and if you are the only Jewish family in your town the eighth day still arrives on schedule.

Being in-state is the practical difference

Three things only work when the mohel is not several hours away, and they come up constantly:

  • The baby arrives early, and the eighth day moves with him rather than with the due date.
  • The date only firms up two days out, because of jaundice or feeding or a paediatric review.
  • The eighth day falls on a Shabbat or a festival — a bris happens anyway, which is part of why

a mohel is a distinct role from hospital staff.

In Michigan these are phone calls. Out of state they are sometimes problems.

If your son is not well, the bris waits. Jewish law puts his health first in plain terms, and a postponed bris is correct practice rather than a compromise.

Michigan bris questions

Do you travel outside metro Detroit for a bris?

Yes, anywhere in Michigan. Oakland County is where most of the work is, but we go across the state and have no minimum community size.

We are in Ann Arbor and new to the area. Where do we start?

With a free consultation — you do not need a synagogue membership or a local referral to call us. Ann Arbor is close enough that dates are rarely a problem.

Is a Michigan bris cheaper because you are local?

The professional fee is the same everywhere. Travel is lower in Michigan than anywhere else we go, and in Oakland County it is the lowest we quote.

What it costs, wherever you are

A $980 professional fee, plus travel expenses. The fee does not change by city; travel does, and it is quoted upfront before you commit to anything.

Not sure which page applies to you?

Tell us the town and the due date and we will give you a straight answer, including when the answer is that someone closer is the better fit.
