Mohel in Indianapolis, IN — A Bris at Home
Indianapolis families tell us the same thing often enough that it belongs at the top of this page: finding a mohel locally is harder here than it should be. Indiana has a smaller Jewish community than Ohio or Michigan, and fewer practising mohelim to go with it.
That is most of why we travel here.
The community we come to
Most of the families we visit are on the north side — Carmel, Meridian-Kessler, Broad Ripple and the surrounding Hamilton and Marion County communities. We come across Greater Indianapolis, and further into Indiana on request.
Rabbi Tzvi Fischer is a certified mohel, trained in New York, certified by the International Bris Milah Association, performing circumcisions since 2001 — the seventh generation of his family to do this work. He comes to your house; your son stays in your arms.
THE EIGHTH DAY
When there is no local option, the lead time is everything
If you are in a city with six mohelim, a late phone call is recoverable — someone will be free. In Indianapolis that cushion does not exist, which changes the arithmetic. A brit milah is on the eighth day, counted from the birth, and it does not move.
So: call when you have a due date. Not when you have a baby, and not when you have an eighth day four days out. Indiana is a planned trip for us, and with notice we plan it around your date.
Travel is quoted upfront, before you commit to anything.
If your son is not well on the eighth day, the bris waits. Jaundice, prematurity, low weight or illness all postpone it. Jewish law puts his health first in plain terms, and a postponed bris is correct practice rather than a failure.
Indianapolis bris questions
There is no mohel near us. How does this work?
We travel to you, and the whole visit happens in your home. The thing that makes it work is lead time: with a due date we can plan the trip around your eighth day.
Do you come to Carmel, Fishers and the north-side suburbs?
Yes, and across Greater Indianapolis. Carmel in particular is where a good share of the families who call us live.
Can you also do a straightforward medical circumcision with no ceremony?
Yes, and plenty of Indiana families ask for exactly that. The same visit, the same care, without the blessings or the naming.
It is a real circumcision, properly done
A local anesthetic, sterile professional-grade instruments, and screening beforehand — prematurity, feeding, weight, jaundice, bleeding history, vitamin K. There are findings, hypospadias among them, that mean we decline and tell you why. What the visit involves · the ceremony in full · mohel vs. doctor.
If you want no religious element at all, that is also the visit — families who are not Jewish choose a mohel for the specialism rather than the tradition.
What it costs
A $980 professional fee, plus travel expenses, quoted upfront. No separate ceremony charge. Indiana travel reflects a planned out-of-state trip and is on the quote upfront.
