Pennsylvania has more out-of-hospital birth than most states
Of the four states we serve, Pennsylvania has by far the richest birth-center and midwifery landscape — 93 local birth professionals across the eight cities on this page, including 31 birth centers and hospital birthing units, 27 midwifery practices and 35 doulas.
The Midwife Center for Birth & Women's Health in Pittsburgh is southwestern Pennsylvania's only licensed and accredited freestanding birth center. The Reading Midwife Center carries on the Reading Birth and Women's Center legacy in Berks County. Around Lancaster and Reading in particular, out-of-hospital birth is simply ordinary.
Which makes the circumcision question unusually common here. A hospital that did not deliver your baby will generally not circumcise him, and a family who deliberately chose an unhurried, out-of-hospital birth rarely wants a clinic waiting room three days later. We come to your home instead — the same calm setting, on your schedule.

Our baby was born at a birth center or at home. Can you still do the circumcision?
Yes, and in Pennsylvania this is the single most common reason families call. Birth-center and home births are more common here than in most states, and we work alongside your midwife rather than around her. We come once your baby is healthy and feeding well.
Can you perform a bris in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Rabbi Fischer performs traditional brisim with blessings and a baby naming, as well as simple medical circumcisions, for families of all backgrounds and traditions. More on a bris in Pennsylvania.
How soon after birth can the circumcision be done?
Usually within the first one to four weeks, once your baby is healthy and feeding well. A bris takes place on the eighth day. We'll confirm the right timing during your free consultation.
